Biometric Attendance System in the UAE: A Buyer's Guide for 2026

How to choose a biometric attendance system in the UAE: the right terminal, cloud push instead of an on-site server, the UAE rules the software must calculate, and a 10-point checklist.

Most UAE businesses shopping for a biometric attendance system already own the hardest part: the terminal on the wall. What fails them is everything behind it. A Windows PC in a back office that someone has to keep switched on. A monthly CSV export. A spreadsheet where lateness and overtime get worked out by hand, differently by each person who touches it.

This guide is for whoever has to pick a time attendance system in Dubai, Abu Dhabi or anywhere in the UAE in 2026: the terminal, the software, the rules it must calculate, and the questions that separate a system that works from one nobody trusts.

Start with the problem, not the device

Before you compare terminals, write down what goes wrong today. In most UAE companies it is one of these:

A good biometric attendance system fixes all five. A terminal on its own fixes none of them.

1. Pick the terminal for the environment

The terminal is the one part your staff touch twice a day, so match it to where it is mounted.

Face recognition suits receptions, retail and sites where hands are gloved, wet or dusty. Construction, warehousing and cleaning crews often have worn fingerprints that read badly, and a face terminal sidesteps the problem.

Fingerprint terminals are cheap, proven and fine for offices and light retail. Many models add a card reader or PIN for the few people whose fingers will not read.

Combined face and fingerprint units give you a fallback on the same device, which matters at a busy shift change when a queue forms.

Whatever you pick, two features are not optional in 2026. The terminal must store punches in its own memory, so a network drop delays data instead of losing it. And it must support cloud push (on ZKTeco terminals this is the ADMS or "Cloud Server" setting), so it sends punches out to the software on its own rather than waiting for a PC on the same network to collect them.

If you already have ZKTeco terminals, you probably do not need new ones. Wurxa is confirmed on the SpeedFace V4L, V4L Pro, V5L, F18 and K40, and other ZKTeco models that support ADMS push connect the same way. Hikvision face terminals are supported in Beta.

2. Insist on cloud push, not an on-site server

This is the decision that matters most, and it is invisible on a spec sheet.

Older attendance software lives on a PC on your network and pulls punches from each terminal. The PC must stay on, someone must back it up, and a multi-site business ends up with several of these islands to merge by hand.

With cloud push, the terminal calls out to the software over the internet. There is nothing to install on site, nothing to back up, and a new branch is connected by typing a server address into the terminal's menu. Because the connection is outbound, you do not need a static IP or port forwarding at the store, only that the terminal can reach the internet.

Wurxa for ZKTeco works exactly this way: you point the terminal's cloud server setting at Wurxa, claim it by serial number, and punches arrive as they happen. A terminal that loses its connection keeps its records and sends them when it is back. We explain why that is safe in what happens to attendance when the internet goes down.

3. Check what the software calculates

The terminal records a time. Everything that matters to payroll is worked out afterwards, and this is where most systems fall short.

Ask any vendor to show you, on a real day, how it works out:

Wurxa works every one of these out from the raw punches, the same way on every screen, so the monthly report, the overtime audit and the live board agree. Sites in several countries keep their own time zone, rest days and public holidays. For the legal side, read UAE working hours and overtime rules.

4. Cover the people who never see a terminal

Every UAE business has staff who start the day somewhere other than the office. If your system only knows terminals, those people end up on paper.

Wurxa's phone app lets an approved employee punch in and out with a selfie and their location recorded on each punch, and the selfie is checked against their enrolled reference photo. Most companies mix the two, and both land on the same live board and reports.

5. Know when a terminal stops reporting

Terminals fail: power is cut, a cable is pulled, a router is replaced. The dangerous failure is the silent one, where the screen keeps saying "online" because that was the last thing the terminal reported. In Wurxa, status comes from the last time the terminal actually contacted the server. A terminal is online if it checked in within 15 minutes, shows a warning after that, and is marked offline after two hours of silence. If it is silent for over an hour, the owner and IT admin get an alert in the app and by email. When it comes back, Pull data reads the punches it stored while it was away, for any date range, without changing anything on the device.

6. Make sure attendance reaches payroll without re-keying

Attendance is only half the job. Hours, overtime and absence have to reach payroll and the WPS salary file, and leave has to stop an approved day off from showing as absent.

In Wurxa, attendance, leave and WPS payroll sit in one workspace. Approved leave shows on the roster and is not counted as absence. With the Payroll & WPS add-on, the same hours and overtime feed payroll and the SIF file, so nobody rebuilds the month in a spreadsheet.

7. Ask the uncomfortable questions about biometric data

Fingerprint and face templates are personal data about your staff. Before you sign, ask where the data is stored, who can see it, and what happens when someone leaves. In Wurxa, enrolled fingerprints stay on the terminal and Wurxa keeps a copy so a person enrolled once can be added to your other terminals. When you deactivate someone, Wurxa removes them from the terminal so they can no longer clock in there, while their attendance history stays intact.

A buyer's checklist

Try it on the terminals you already own

Wurxa ticks all ten. It is free for up to 5 employees on one site, and paid plans start at AED 1,188 a year plus VAT for up to 30 employees, as a flat yearly price rather than per seat. Your terminals stay, so there is no hardware to buy.

Every new workspace starts with a 14-day trial with every feature switched on and no card required. Start your free trial, connect one terminal, and see a week of real punches worked out the way your payroll needs them. Or read more about Wurxa Attendance first.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best biometric attendance system for a UAE business?

One that pairs a terminal that stores punches locally and supports cloud push with software that works out lateness, overtime at 125% and 150%, rest days and public holidays from the raw punches. Wurxa does this on the ZKTeco terminals UAE businesses already own, with no server on site, and adds phone punch for staff without a terminal.

Should I choose a face or fingerprint attendance terminal?

Face recognition suits receptions, retail and sites where hands are gloved, wet or dusty, and staff with worn fingerprints. Fingerprint terminals are proven and fine for offices. Combined face and fingerprint units give a fallback on the same device. Whichever you choose, make sure it supports cloud push (ADMS on ZKTeco).

Do I need a server or PC on site for a biometric attendance system?

Not with cloud push. The terminal sends punches over the internet straight to the software, so there is no PC, database or backup to maintain on site. Wurxa is hosted, and a terminal only needs internet access and outbound port 80.

Can I keep my existing ZKTeco terminals?

Yes. Wurxa connects to ZKTeco terminals over ADMS push and is confirmed on the SpeedFace V4L, V4L Pro, V5L, F18 and K40. Other ZKTeco models that support ADMS push connect the same way, so there is no hardware to buy.

What happens if the internet goes down at a site?

The terminal keeps recording punches in its own memory and sends them when the connection is back, so data is delayed rather than lost. Wurxa marks a terminal offline from its last real contact, alerts the owner and IT admin after an hour of silence, and Pull data can read any punches still on the device.

How much does a biometric attendance system cost with Wurxa?

Wurxa is free for up to 5 employees on one site. Paid plans are a flat yearly price per tier, starting at AED 1,188 a year plus VAT for up to 30 employees. Every new workspace gets a 14-day trial with every feature and no card required.
